The Coastguard has issued a warning to members of the public after a suspected explosive item was found on the Cumbrian coast.

The Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team were called out just after 5.30pm to reports of suspected ordnance on the shore south of Workington on Monday evening.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) had assessed the item as an expired gas cylinder and it was marked with Coastguard tape before the team stood down.

Despite the false alarm, the Coastguard has urged members of the public to continue reporting such items in the future.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said: "On occasion, we find that historic ordnance items or marine pyrotechnics are washed ashore or uncovered by the tide along our coastline.

"These come in various shapes and sizes.

"As these items can be dangerous to the public, we would urge people not to touch these items.

"Take a note of the precise location and report these to the Coastguard immediately on 999.

"Our officers, along with EOD will asses the items and if required a controlled detonation may be carried out by EOD."

The item will be disposed of by local authorities.

The Coastguard also thanked the informant of the item for not touching or moving it, and taking the precise location details and reporting it to the Coastguard could carry out an on-site assessment.

In a coastal, sea or cliff emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
