An appalled councillor has shared his frustration over reports of drinkers cutting down trees at a lakeside to use for firewood.

Cumbria police confirmed they are investigating an incident of criminal damage at Wastwater, which took place at about 6.45am on Saturday.

It was reported that a large group of people were drinking alcohol and cutting down trees at the lake to set the wood on fire.

A spokesperson said: “We would advise those who are travelling to Wasdale and other areas of the Lake District that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated, and action will be taken against those who damage the land.”

Cumbria County Councillor Paul Turner – who oversees Wasdale ward – is "appalled" by the behaviour, and is urging residents to report any further incidents like this to the police immediately.

"It's disgraceful, deplorable, and absolutely horrendous," he said.

"I've heard that this sort of thing has been happening all over the Lake District, and it's awful that we have it here, now.

"It's a terrible state of affairs when it gets to this point, and I'm just so disappointed to know this sort of disrespect and foolishness has taken place.

"Everyone needs to report this sort of behaviour to police online, or by calling 101, because it's so important to let them know it's happening, and how often as well.

"Or if you witness it taking place, call 999, because at the end of the day, it's a crime that's taking place, and it needs to be dealt with."

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

Anyone with information relating to this incident is urged to report it online at www.cumbria.police.uk/reportit, quoting incident number 61 of June 12, or call police on 101.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
