When it comes to comfort food, nothing quite beats tucking into a chippy tea.

Whether you prefer battered cod or fishcake, enjoy lashings of gravy or curry sauce, it’s fair to say that one of Britain’s quintessential and favourite dishes is fish and chips.

1 ARRIGHI’S FISH & CHIP RESTAURANT, WHITEHAVEN

Located at 67 Market Place this chippy was a popular choice among residents.

Jacob Greenley said: “The chips are possibly the best I’ve ever had.

"Delicious again on a recent visit.

"Great stuff.”

Barbara Ellis said: “The fish was cooked fresh and proper home-made chips – very tasty.

"A bonus is the chippy is dog friendly.”

2 FRASER’S, WHITEHAVEN

Fraser’s is a family ran, local business serving a fantastic variety of hot and cold food with the option of taking away or dining in, with fresh food prepared daily.

Pamela Beck said: “Jumbo fish fingers made with a proper piece of fish, proper mushy peas, nice crispy batter on the fish and the best chips we have ever tasted. Delicious.

"Pleasant staff as well.

"Always recommend to locals.”

Michael Price commented: “Good food, good service, reasonable prices and outdoor seating available.”

Ian Williamson said: “Fish was really lovely and absolutely massive, really fresh fish in a nicely done batter.

He added: "Excellent value at Fraser’s.”

3 THE CODFATHER, ALLONBY

A very popular choice amongst our readers. The Codfather gained many mentions.

Aaron Price said the chippy had "amazing food."

He added: "Well worth a visit. All the food was cooked fresh to order.

"Totally worth a10 out of 10 from me.”

Elizabeth Manning couldn’t contain her excitement for the chippy.

She said: “This IS simply the BEST fish and chips you will ever ever eat!”

4 THE SUNNY HILL PUB, WHITEHAVEN

Situated on Victoria Road this is a family favourite among residents.
