With a week of sunshine behind us, and hopefully plenty more scorching summer days ahead of us, we're taking a look back at the summer of 1990, when there was plenty of fun to be had – and endless top costumes, too!

Kicking off the summer celebrations, May 1990 saw the ninth Cumbrian Run take place.

And people across Copeland couldn't resist getting involved, with people throughout Whitehaven and beyond dressing up as animals, babies and everything in-between to mark the event.

More than 400 people turned out to run, jog and walk on the sun-drenched day, setting off from Whitehaven Castle to raise money for charity with their cracking costumes and hard work.

But the people of Whitehaven – and wider Cumbria – weren't done with their fabulous outfits just yet.

In August 1990, the town was overrun with people taking part in the Whitehaven Carnival, with thousands turning out in their best – and wildest – fancy dress to have a dance and sing-song at the colourful event.

Youngsters were dressed as 80s rockers, Distington School of Dance proudly marched with a banner, and even the Cockermouth Rose Queen made an appearance on her own special float.

Community spirit can sometimes feel hard to come by, but Copeland shows off its support by the bucketful – and these two major events were perfect proof of this.

But of course, summer's not all about events and parades, as even a simple play in the park can boost your mood and create a lasting memory.

Castle Park, in Whitehaven, offered a great place for all young people in the town to enjoy, and everyone from tiny tots to teens took advantage of the lovely space.

From a simple swing to sharing a swaying tyre, youngsters had a ball spending time together in the park on a toasty summer's day in 1990 – and there's no doubt Castle Park will be seeing plenty more faces come along for a perfect afternoon for many years to come.

So why not take inspiration from the 90s, and head out for an afternoon of park-filled fun.
