More than 80,000 people in north and west Cumbria have received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, figures have revealed.

NHS data has shown that, as of May 9, a total of 88,233 people across Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland were fully vaccinated against the virus, with 34,733 of these in Carlisle, 32,817 in Allerdale, and 20,683 in Copeland.

In the north of the county, 39 per cent of those aged 16 and above received both jabs, based on the latest population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

A total of 30,696 people to have received both doses were aged 40 and above – 51 per cent of the age group – with 4,037 people aged between 16 and 39 years old being fully vaccinated.

Across the Carlisle area, 69 per cent of those aged 16 and above had received their first dose of the vaccine.

These figures were similar in Allerdale and Copeland, with 40 per cent of the people vaccinated being 16 and above in Allerdale, and 36 per cent in Copeland.

Across England, one third of people aged 16 and above have received their second dose.

In Allerdale, 29,651 people to have received the second jab were aged 40 and above – 51 per cent of the age group – with 3,166 people between 16 and 39 years old receiving both doses.

A total of 76 per cent of those aged 16 and above have been given one dose, and 71 per cent of Copeland’s over-16s have also received their first dose.

The borough has seen 18,908 people aged 40 and over be fully vaccinated – 48 per cent of the age group – and 1,775 people aged between 16 and 39 years old have also been given both jabs.

Areas with the highest coverage in Carlisle include: Belah, with 78.4 per cent of people aged 16 and above given their first dose; Wetheral, Corby and Geltsdale, with 78.2 per cent; and Belle Vue and Burgh, with 77.2 per cent.

Allerdale also has impressive figures, with: 82 per cent of people aged 16 and above in East Cockermouth and Buttermere given their first dose; 80.3 per cent at Boltons, Warnell and Solway Coast; and 79.7 per cent in West Cockermouth and Great Broughton.

In Copeland: 73.2 per cent of Thornhill, Gosforth and Seascale’s over-16s have received their first jab; 73 per cent at Millom and Duddon Valley; and 72.1 per cent in Parton and Distington.

Areas with the lowest coverage include: Central Carlisle, with 55.9 per cent of over-16s receiving their first dose; Allerdale’s Workington West, with 68.9 per cent; and Copeland’s Mirehouse, Kells and Woodhouse, with 68 per cent.

Across England, 15 million people had received a second dose of the jab by May 9, including 33 per cent of the population aged over 16 and above, and 47 per cent of people aged 40 and above.

In total, 29.4 million people had received at least one dose of a vaccine by the same date, covering 65 per cent of people over 16.
