Many of the major supermarkets have attempted to make life easier for their customers during the pandemic.

They have donated food, ensured that the most vulnerable were able to get frequent deliveries and have generally helped wherever possible.

Morrisons in Whitehaven is one of these - and if not the leader, at least equalling what everyone else has done.

Community champion Sharon

Graham has ensured that the store takes advantage of any and every offer of help available and has also made sure that people know about it.

The latest Morrisons' initiative is the Children's Little Library.

Poor literacy among children is a growing problem, made worse because of Covid. It has been estimated that 380 000 households do not have a single book in their home.

The Little Library will be set up next to the foodbank donation station where customers can drop off second hand books or pick a book up from the shielding part of the station.

Sharon has been dropping books off to schools.

The supermarket also runs a Little Sunshine project where children are nominated for good they have done in the community.

A supermarket is not a person and cannot, therefore, be a person of the week.

But Morrisons, both in Whitehaven and elsewhere, have gone above and beyond and with community champions like Sharon Graham, they have made the pandemic a little easier for all.

They give out sunflower seeds to "make good things happen."

As you walk into the store there are grab bags. Choose one to fill further or just to take what is in to the checkout for the foodbanks.

Stores have a 'random acts of kindness' project where staff are asked to do something kind either for each other or customers.

"I have the best job in the world, said Morrison's community campion Sharon Graham.

"I get to organise these things.I get to visit schools distributing books and sunflower seeds and helping people with the backing of the company.

A supermarket is not a person but people like Sharon Graham make it seem is is indeed a building with a beating heart.
