READERS of the Whitehaven News have reacted after a woman was arrested following a climate protest.

Climate crisis activists staged protests in Kendal and Carlisle, with the protesters - inspired by the national Extinction Rebellion (XR) movement -blocking roads in the area as part of a national day of protest in the run-up to the UK hosted UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in November.

Police have confirmed that a 58-year-old Carlisle woman was arrested, and readers were unimpressed by the actions of the protesters.

Stan Adair said: "On a world scale nothing we do in the UK. will make any difference to the ‘climate crises’. These people should take themselves off to China where the real damage is being done to protest."

Ian Maxwell added: "Spilled onto the streets in their ones.

"Fighting climate change while holding cars up with their engines running and exhaust pipes blowing merrily. Great result XR," while Bob Harvey wrote in response: "That's the point I've just made ,these eco idiots are causing more pollution by holding everything up."

Stephen Flook added: "Wonder how they got to the protest place, bet they didn't walk. Plant a few more trees while your there."

Campaigners say that "non-violent direct action" is their way of highlighting the dual climate and ecological crisis.

As they staged sit-down protests, their group apologised for inconveniencing people - but insisted that civil disobedience is the only way to get the government to act.

In Carlisle, witnesses reported seeing police lead a woman away from the scene of a protest in The Crescent, Carlisle.

Wendi Lethbridge, who sat in the road in Kendal town centre, said lives would be lost because of the climate crisis.

The protesters say the government is paying only lip service to the climate crisis and say they no longer trust the UK Government with their future.
