Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford has helped Manchester City's rising stars claim a league title.

Trafford, 18, was part of City's Elite Development Squad team that wrapped up the Premier League 2 title this week.

It is yet another positive step in the promising career of the former Carlisle United academy kid, who comes from Greysouthen near Cockermouth.

Trafford, who has been on the first-team bench for Pep Guardiola's side this season, was in goal as City saw off West Ham 1-0 in their first game as champions.

That came after their PL2 title was confirmed when nearest rivals Blackburn were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool last week.

Trafford's clean sheet against the Hammers helped City to victory through Felix Nmecha's penalty.

Striker Liam Delap, son of ex-Carlisle favourite Rory, also stars for City's EDS team, who have gone 16 games unbeaten.

England youth keeper Trafford has been with the top-flight giants since the age of 12 after being snapped up from Carlisle.

He has been in the first-team matchday squad in the Premier League and Carabao Cup this season - including in the semi-final against Manchester United in the latter competition.

Trafford was also on the bench for City's recent Champions League games against Borussia Dortmund.

Guardiola has said the teenager is "growing really well" at the club whose senior keepers are Ederson, Zack Steffen and veteran Cumbrian Scott Carson.

It is understood City will look to send the young Cumbrian out on loan next season to further his development.

City's EDS coach Enzo Maresca said of their PL2 title win: “It’s a fantastic achievement especially in the way we achieved it and I am very proud of the players and the staff and I want to thank them all.

“For me it’s been a lovely season, a beautiful season - especially because I saw the players making an effort to understand the game."
