A CAMPAIGN to train young people to be wellbeing champions will become a reality thanks to backing from Sellafield's Can Do fund.

Together We, under the I Will campaign will run a series of training sessions to equip 10 young people between the ages of 10 to 14 with the skills to be able to advise others in their age and peer groups on mental health and wellbeing issues.

The Cumbria Community Foundation manages the funding pot and has allocated just under £5,000 for the project.

Managing director of Together We CIC Janine Ward said: "We are really really pleased we have got the opportunity to break the stigma and deliver a bottom up approach to mental health support."

Sessions will include emotional resilience, supporting people with body image issues, exam stress, self-harm and suicide awareness.

The specialist training will take place in West Cumbria over two months and will be specifically designed for the age range of 10 to 14.

Janine said: "It's sensitive, but we're not trying to tip toe around the subjects."

After the training the 10 young person wellbeing champions, who will come from Allerdale and Copeland, will be able to be conversationalists on the issues, recognise when help is needed and be able to signpost young people in the right direction to get any help that they require.
