Officers are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision on the A596.
The incident took place at Micklethwaite at 8:40am today (23 February).
Police were contacted to a report of a two vehicle collision involving a Volvo HGV and a Vauxhall Corsa.
The driver of the Corsa, a local woman in her fifties, has sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle.
The driver of the Volvo, a man in his sixties, was uninjured.
Along with officers, NWAS and the fire service are also in attendance.
