A NEW chairman has been appointed at Sellafield Limited.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority announced on Thursday that Tony Meggs CB will take over as chairman of Sellafield Limited, he will begin his three year term on May 3 2021.

Mr Meggs succeeds Lorraine Baldry who has held the chairmanship since May 2018. The new chairman will report directly to NDA chief executive officer David Peattie.

Mr Peattie said: “I am delighted that Tony has agreed to be the next chairman of the Sellafield Ltd Board.

“Tony brings a huge breadth of leadership experience and his insight on major infrastructure projects and the energy sector will be invaluable to Sellafield. I look forward to working with him and know he will have a significant impact on Sellafield Ltd.”

Mr Meggs is an experienced chairman and senior leader with 30 years of leadership in the public and private sector.

He was recently chairman of Crossrail, engaged in 2019 to oversee the integration phase of the project.

He held senior roles at BP including head of technology which put him in charge of the its central project, engineering functions and R&D. He also co-founded the BP Projects Academy, building a cohort of leaders to maximise success of the organisation’s projects, it later became the inspiration for the Government’s Major Projects Leadership Academy.

Sellafield Ltd chief executive officer Martin Chown said: “I’m very pleased to welcome Tony as our new chairman. Tony has a good appreciation of the Sellafield site, and understanding of the progress we are making. Together, we share the same passion for our work, employees and local communities.”
