Today we’ve been searching through our archives for photographs of the former Carlisle department store Bulloughs which was based in a five-floor building on Castle Street, directly opposite Carlisle Cathedral.

The family-owned shop had traded from the site from for almost 100 years from 1910 until it closed in 2006 when it was taken over by Hoopers which subsequently closed in 2012.

Known as “the store with the London look” Bulloughs was an institution in Carlisle and attracted shoppers from the city and further afield . As well as women’s fashion the store boasted menswear and homeware departments and was home to a hair and beauty salon and a café which was a popular meeting place for shoppers.

Our photos show staff modelling fashions over the years.

Do you have happy memories of meeting friends for a coffee in Bulloughs’ café or did you work there?

Shopping trends have changed but Bulloughs is missed by many.
