A NUMBER of potential major new developments at Sellafield are potentially on the horizon.

Copeland Council's mayor, Mike Starkie, has outlined to his fellow councillors that plans for a number of developments at the nuclear site may soon be revealed.

In a report prepared in advance of next week's meeting of Copeland Council, Mr Starkie outlined that "confidential pre-application discussions" are currently progressing between the local authority and Sellafield Ltd in regards to a number of "major developments".

One of these potential developments is the establishment of a new Civil Nuclear Constabulary Operational Unit, plans for which Mr Starkie said are set to be submitted for approval by the end of this year.

In addition, Mr Starkie explained that Sellafield is considering the development of replacement analytical laboratories on the Sellafield site, as well as the demolition of Calder Hall Turbine Hall A.
