A HEALTH expert has warned that a dramatic reduction of Covid-19 restrictions could mean a third wave of the virus in January.

Dr John Campbell of Carlisle said: “We’re falling at the final hurdle.

“What it means is there will be a January surge as there will be a Thanksgiving surge in America. “It’s such a pity because we’re so close now to the end and this could really mess things up.”

And readers of the News & Star had their say.

David Walker said: “Wouldn’t surprise me if the relaxing of the coronavirous restrictions resulted in a third wave absolutely stupid thing to do.”

Louise McAdam Johnson said: "Every year the peak is January for flu and pneumonia. This year will be no different but blamed on Christmas and called the third wave."

Julie Ridley-Shannan said: "No one will be safe until the public comply to restrictions. How many are going about doing what they've always done?"

Caroline Jane said: "Any measures that delay the spread of the virus will create an apparent ‘wave’ when they are lifted. "lockdowns" therefore create artificial ‘waves’, they don’t suppress them."

Peter Cairns said: "People need to earn or there will be nothing left, in particular small businesses."

Kerry Cannon said: "Of course there will be a spike in cases, it will never be eradicated so if we keep isolating then releasing there will always be spikes and yes there will always be more cases because there are more tests being done than the first wave so more results!

She said: "We need to stop panicking!"

The Government announced plans to roll-back Covid-19 restrictions in November.

One of our readers, Ian Grainger said: “Christmas isn’t all about parties and get togethers.

“They can be had any time, surely people can wait. Be sensible.”

Vanessa Done said: “Staying safe is more important than Christmas.”
