Readers got in touch by Facebook to comment on a story about three walkers who dialled 999 after getting lost trying to hike up Helvellyn.

Keswick, and Patterdale Mountain Rescue Teams were called out to help. A spokesman said: “The party of three inexperienced walkers were intending to ascend Helvellyn on the usual path from Wythburn, Thirlmere. However, soon after leaving the car park they lost the main track but continued upwards for several hours into the mist.

“They eventually called 999 after one of their party was said to have fainted.” Many of you think they should have been charged.

Maureen Robinson said: “They should be charged for each rescue."

Thomas Beck said: “Should be fined and the amount given to the mountain rescue.”

Mark Hamilton said: “If you drove your car inappropriately for the road conditions, and had an accident, you may be charged with reckless driving and fined. So fine/charge the walkers the price of recovery, or at least everyone has to have a rescue insurance.”

Carole Reardon said: “Thought we were in lockdown – shouldn’t be up there." Lee Smith agreed: “We are on lockdown, should be charged can’t class climbing that as daily exercise.”

Sarah Brown said: “Disgusting, they should he charged for this we’re in lockdown.”
