POLICE say they have solved the mystery of human bones washed up on a Cumbrian beach.

With the help of a forensic anthropologist, the several human bones found at Thorny Nook, Biggar Bank, Walney, in July, has been confirmed to be non-recent, said a spokesman for Cumbria Constabulary today.

In a statement, the force said that an investigation was launched after the bones were found.

"The bones were subsequently recovered and examined by a forensic anthropologist," said a spokesman for the force.

"The result of the examination has been received and investigating officers can confirm that all the bones are non-recent.

"Expert opinion dates them between the years 1440 to 1640.

The officer in the case, Detective Constable Sarah Knight, thanked those members of the public involved in the discovery for their diligence is helping the enquiry. "The police investigation has now been finalised and all relevant information forwarded to the County Archaeologist," added the spokesman.
