The problem of school parking congestion in Lowry Hill could be helped by increased school capacity in the area, say readers of the News & Star.

Their comments come following the publication of a story about residents in Liddle Close and Hether Drive being frustrated by the volume of cars during school pick-up and drop-off times at Kingmoor Nursery and Infant School and Kingmoor Junior School.

Despite the school working tirelessly to make it as safe for children as possible and take the strain off the estate by coming up with ways to tackle the parking issue, residents say it is “chaos.”

Rob Oliver said: “The traffic would be far less if parents from Crindledyke had been provided with the school they were originally promised.”

Sylvia Bulman agreed. She said with the catchment getting bigger, another school was needed north of the river. “Don’t keep building houses without building schools,” she said.

Many readers suggested those who can should walk to school to help ease congestion. Others said they experienced similar situations with school parking elsewhere in the city.

Deborah Blair said: “Its the same everywhere. If people would walk instead of driving it would be a lot easier. They seem to think they have to be as near to the gates as possible.”

But Lucy Armstrong, who grew up on the street, said she’d never seen it so bad.

“The school is considerably bigger than when I went [there] and they also have a large nursery there now,” she said. “That alone will be responsible for the increased numbers attending school, so the increase in housing is only partially the issue.

“The school will have increased in size due to the extra housing or vice versa but also kids attend the school now from out of the immediate area which will affect the parking.

“More parents than ever are working now too so it’s not as easy as to say people should walk to school. It could well be that parents drive, when they do live on the estate, but in order to then continue into work so it’s not an easy issue to solve.”
