Today we’ve been looking back through our archives for photos of the iconic hotel Sharrow Bay after it was announced last month that it had closed with its parent company set to be placed in liquidation. Francis Coulson bought the mansion on the edge of Ullswater with 12 acres of grounds and formal gardens in 1948 and opened it as a country house hotel in the same year. In 1952 Francis was joined by Brian Sack, and the two of them ran the hotel for the rest of their lives.

The hotel became one of the best known in the country and many celebrities visited but the owners ensured that it was always a favourite place for locals. The hotel also supported many charities over the years. Our photographs give a flavour of the events that have taken place over the years.
