COMMUNITY grants worth £600,000 are set to benefit vulnerable children and families across west Cumbria.

Last week a panel from Transforming West Cumbria, which is funded by Sellafield, awarded the money to seven projects that focus on "supporting sustainable activities that create self-reliance and independence".

Grants of up to £50,000 a year for 3 years are available.

The organisations that get money for projects are Groundwork North East and Cumbria, Safety Net (UK), Howgill Family Centre, Time to Change West Cumbria, Cumbria Alcohol and Drug Advisory Service, Together We CIC and Barnardo’s.

Head of community and development at Sellafield, Gary McKeating said: "Transforming West Cumbria is the perfect demonstration of our social impact multiplied programme.

"It was co-created with the Cumbria Community Foundation and is designed to help make a difference in tackling issues that people in our communities are living with."
