COASTGUARD crews were called out yesterday following reports of an overdue swimmer at Derwentwater.

Both the Whitehaven and Maryport teams were tasked by by CGOC Belfast Coastguard to assist following reports that the swimmer had not returned when expected.

A spokesman for the Whitehaven team said: "While ourselves and Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team were responding, the welcome news came through that the swimmer had come out of the water and there was no cause for concern.

"By quickly alerting the emergency services this enables the necessary assets to be requested to attend, from which a search and/or rescue can be coordinated.

"Early calls make for a swifter conclusion to any incident and we would like to thank the caller for taking the correct action.

In a coastal, sea or cliff emergency, always call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
