They walked, jogged, ran and, by the end, almost crawled but 15 people have raised £6,000 and counting for local charities.

The group had all signed up under the umbrella of Together We Can, the Copeland charity that supports other charities in the area.

The 15 individuals showed what they could do together on Sunday when they all took part in the virtual Great North Run.

Together We Can founder Julieanne Kelly said: “Well, what a fantastic day we had.

“The rain kept away and the sun came out towards the end of the challenge,

“Thank you to the 15 people who signed up for the challenge, by walking, jogging or running the Virtual GNR 2020.

“We had a fantastic day, raising money for local charitable causes. “

The afternoon ended on a high with family and friends waiting to cheer participants on and refreshments and snacks for everyone.

Julieanne added: “A big thank you to the Solway Hall in Whitehaven who hosted the finish line and managed to serve the refreshments, welcome family and friends and retain socially distancing.”

The charities which will benefit from their efforts are Always Another Way, Blue Sky Trust Cumbria, Freedom Project, the Solway Hall, Team Evie, Women Out West, Whitehaven Theatre Group and Whitehaven Theatre of Youth.
