A group of eight spent several cold hours when they got lost on the fells yesterday.

Police called Wasdale Search and Rescue just after 9.20 on Saturday night to report that the group were lost.

They had lost signal on their phones and were unable to navigate. They said they were experienced, uninjured, but were wet and cold and had insufficient food or water.

"What3words" the geocode system for the communication of locations put them in Green Hole, Upper Eskdale.

They said they would attempt to get back to their vehicle in Langdale. Then the call to the police cut out and the team leader was unable to contact them, so no further information was available.

Numerous "phonefinds" and texts did not reach them, so with such a lack of information about their abilities and wellbeing, a limited callout was made.

The party made a second call to the police to say they had found a path,

However, the second What 3 put them outside the UK.

With some experimenting with the words by a team member, a second location put them 50m up the hill towards Three Tarns. Langdale and Ambleside team were alerted. T

The Wasdale team were stood down.

The party eventually got back to Langdale at 02:33 this morning..
