Now that the schools have finally reopened for a new school year, we thought we would look back over previous years.

These are the days when social distancing was not a barrier to a group photograph, here we can see some of the new starters from the recent past.

We have dipped into our archives this week and been transported back to first day nerves for pupils of St Michael’s School in Bothel; Broughton Primary School; Shankhill Primary School, Carlisle; Braithwaite Primary School, Keswick; Bishop Harvey Goodwin School in Carlisle; Brook Street Primary School, Carlisle; Ireby Primary School, Wigton; Brampton Primary School and Lanercost Primary School.

The focus is on the new starters’ big day at their new school.

Looking at these sweet smiling faces, there are some angelic expressions, and a few children a little nervous at the prospect of beginning their new school year.

But we have to wonder if this year’s intake will get to share the joy of the group school photo.

Will they be allowed to strike a pose for a photo, with the strict coronavirus measures that have been implemented in schools?

Perhaps the schools can arrange for a socially distanced capture of the important milestone?

Or they might only have a few starting, like St Michael’s School in Bothel above, that just had two people begin their school year in 2015.

Or three, like the happy trio that were embarking on their new term at Shankhill School. Hopefully the schools might be able to arrange for some photographs to be taken to mark the important event, even if it means having a digital zoom type approach.

Looking at this week’s nostalgia photos, children with every hair in place, shoes spotless, and a brand new sparkling uniform – can you spot yourself here or do you recognise any of your children?
