With the 'staycation' holiday season in full swing we asked for ideas on where the best views in the county can be found.

Cumbria is a county that has many where many stunning vistas only a short drive from where many readers live.

Are they found after an arduous trek up Scafell Pike or can they be found at sunset on the coast at St Bees?

Here then, in no particular order, are some of the best views across the county that can be easily accessed from West Cumbria.

1 CATBELLS

The Daffodil Hotel and Spa in Grasmere have listed the popular fell on the west side of Derwent Water.

Its website states: "It certainly looks more challenging than it is.

"The short but steep climb requires a bit of effort, but the 360 degree views are definitely worth it.

"During the day you can park in Keswick and catch the ferry across Derwent Water right to the start of the climb.

"However, if you're beginning the walk in the evening to catch the sunset you are better off finding somewhere to park near Gutherscale Lodge."

2 BUTTERMERE

According to uk.hotels.com Buttermere is on their top 10 list.

It states: "Beautifully surrounded by numerous mountain ranges, Buttermere is a 1.25 mile long lake that is close to fertile dairy pastureland from which it takes its name.

"The scenery here is every bit dramatic, and this is considered one of the best corners of the Lake District for walkers, with low-lying hills like Haystacks among the most popular for climbing.

"There’s also an extensive path that runs around the lakesides of Buttermere, including an atmospheric diversion through an underground tunnel below the Hassness area."

3 FRIARS CRAG, DERWENTWATER, KESWICK

Though it's a well known tourist site, according to the website lakedistrictgems.co.uk:"I still come across people who don’t know it’s there, and it would be a sin not to mention such a beautiful, if popular, view.

"You can reach it along a footpath from the Derwentwater foreshore next to the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick."

4 WASTWATER, FROM WASDALE HEAD

According to theculturetrip.com Wastwater certainly makes the grade as one of the best views in Lakeland.

It states: "Wastwater, the deepest of the Lake District’s lakes, sits along the road to Wasdale Head, a small hamlet at the head of the Wasdale valley, and an area that has historically been the starting point of many walks.

"The majestic lake is surrounded by mountains, including the towering Scafell Pike."

5 GRASMERE FROM LOUGHRIGG TERRACE

Cumbrian Holiday firm Sally's Cottages have listed Grasmere in its favourite views.

It states: "With fine views across Grasmere, Loughrigg Terrace is a path that runs along the side of Loughrigg Fell and offers a good viewpoint to head to as part of a walk around Grasmere or Rydal Water."
