Firefighters in Cumbria have conquered a daunting 24-hour fundraising challenge.

Members of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Cumbria County Council left Keswick’s Moot Hall on Friday night to take part in the Bob Graham relay.

This fell-running challenge requires participants to navigate 42 of the Lake District’s fells, covering 66 miles and 26,900ft of ascent in just 24 hours.

They set off at 8pm and the team returned 23 hours 13 minutes later at the doors of Moot Hall.

Fell runner and firefighter Ricky Lightfoot said: “The team did amazingly well, we had some difficult navigation early on, with visibility down to only a couple of metres which did slow us down.

"Once the dawn began to break at about 4am, the mist cleared and we had some amazing weather, which, if anything, was a little hot in the latter stages."

Cumbria’s firefighters have already smashed their original fundraising target of £500, having currently raised just under £4,000 for a cause close to their hearts - The Firefighters Charity.

The charity supports more than 5,000 people a year and is dedicated to providing lifelong specialist support for members of the firefighting community across the UK.

People can still donate to the team, online at uk.virginmoneygiving.com/CFRSRelayTeam.

Raffle tickets are also available from Workington Community Fire Station until August 17.

Firefighters also had a socially distanced stall in Keswick’s Main Street on Saturday.

They were on hand to offer fire safety advice, a raffle, with a large selection of prizes donated by local businesses, and Welliphant and a darlek for fun for the younger ones.
