The death of a man accused of murder has now been formally registered with the courts.

Trevor Green, 44, from Cleator Moor died in HMP Durham on July 21.

A spokeswoman for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said: "We have written to Preston Crown Court and provided formal confirmation of the death of the defendant Trevor Green."

Prison service officials had previously confirmed that Green died within hours of him appearing before Carlisle Crown Court via a video link.

He was being held in custody accused of murdering his partner, 43-year-old Shelly Clark.

Police launched a murder investigation after an incident at a property in Clayton Avenue, Cleator Moor, on the evening of July 15. It followed a report raising concern for her welfare.

Miss Clark died in hospital the following day.

Tributes at the time described her as a "loving mother, daughter, sister, aunty, niece, cousin - and friend to many".

In a statement following his death, a Prison Service spokesman said: “HMP Durham prisoner Trevor Green died on 21 July.

“As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”
