Whitehaven Coastguard were called to the aid of an elderly man who had fallen at the South Harrington shore.

The Coastguard team were scrambled on Saturday after a man was injured after fallen down the banking at the South Harrington shore.

North West Ambulance Service crews had reached the casualty and had begun treating him, but the Coastguard team's help, along with the Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team's, was needed in transporting the casualty up the steep banking.

A spokesman for the Whitehaven Coastguard team said: "We arrived along with Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team and set up rope rescue equipment to enable us to safely extract the casualty in our stretcher back to the top of the banking and into the ambulance.

"He was transported to hospital for treatment.

"We would like to wish the gentleman a speedy recovery."
