Rugby players, staff and volunteers all came together to support a mental health ward in its time of needs by walking five Wainwrights to raise vital funds.

Egremont ARL coach Gary Hewer and Ryan Dodgson of Frizington, tackled Dodd, Carlside, Longside, Ullock, Pike and Skiddaw.

They were joined by players from amateur clubs Whitehaven Rugby League and Workington Town as well as Whitehaven town councillor Carl Walmsley.

In aid of the Yewdale ward at West Cumberland Hospital, more than 125 people participated and completed the challenge.

Speaking about how the event went, Mr Hewer said: “It was fantastic. There was an array of people.

“It was a real challenge but everyone completed it. It was to raise awareness and, since the challenge, we’ve had more donations coming in and are near the £17,000 mark now.

“We are going to push for the £20,000. We just need to break this stigma.”

Both Mr Hewer and Mr Dodgson said how proud they are of each and every person who took on the challenge on Saturday.

A special thank you has been extended to Zoe Winter who planned the route and led the group safely.

Mr Hewer continued: “We now see the total heading towards £17,500 and, with your help over the coming weeks we would like to achieve the £20,000 which would be ultimately amazing.”

Danny Skulthorpe, who took part in the walk, thanked Mr Hewer and Mr Dodgson for inviting him along.

He said: “I’d like to thank Gary and Ryan for inviting myself and Phil Veivers up on behalf of State of Mind Sport to do the five Wainwright’s challenge fundraiser.

"It was a very tough testing walk up the five mountains but I feel very luck that I’m fit enough to do it. The money that has been raised is fantastic and will change lives.

“Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and any days like today help break down the stigma about this.”
