AS REVELLERS make their way back to the bars and restaurants in Carlisle the decision has been made to once again close the gates on Botchergate.

From July 4 all pubs and restaurants were able to open under new government guidelines.

In the past barriers were put across the road making it safe for pub goers while on a night out.

During lockdown these businesses have been closed and the route has remained open.

The first closure took place last night to help protect the public and allow them to move with out fear of moving traffic.

A spokesman for Cumbria police said: "The barriers closing off Botchergate will close on Friday from 9pm.

"The closure, which also occurs on Saturday nights, is back in place following the reopening of bars and pubs.

"These measures are in place for the safety of the public and to allow them to move freely."
