AN INITIATIVE to get people fishing has been launched for the first three weeks of July.

The Angling Trust, Angling Trades Association and Environment Agency are working together for the Take a Friend Fishing campaign which will run until July 19.

During the campaign, fishing licence holders will be able to register for a free one-day licence to take a friend with them when they go fishing.

Kevin Austin, deputy director for agriculture, fisheries and the natural environment at the Environment Agency, said: “We are delighted to support the relaunch of the Take a Friend Fishing initiative.

“This is the ideal time for anglers to introduce someone new to our wonderful sport.

“By providing a free one-day licence to newcomers we hope many will discover the enjoyment of fishing for the first time and once hooked will be inspired to go again and again.”

Fishing was one of the first sports to return after a relaxation of the lockdown rules in May, and has since seen a small boom.
