MORE than 10,616 people were able to avoid an unnecessary trip to hospital in April thanks to a phone assessment says health bosses.

The North West Ambulance Service said its 'hear and treat' team helped these people get treatment without the need for an ambulance or hospital visit.

It also said in the three months to end of April these rates increased by 35 per cent.
