Rescue teams were called out to help a stranded fishing boat, before lending a helping hand in a beach emergency.

After a mechanical failure left them stranded, two adults and a child on board a 20-foot fishing boat called St Bees RNLI for help.

The team tracked the vessel, attached a towline and pulled the boat into Whitehaven harbour, where members of the Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team were on-hand to help.

Shortly after the incident, which took place on Saturday evening, the crew were called out a second time to help a man who had been injured in a nearby play area.

The team stayed with him until the ambulance arrived to take him to hospital, where he was to be treated for his broken leg.

Dick Beddows, St Bees lifeboat operations manager, said: "If undertaking a sea passage please make sure you have checked the vessel is mechanically sound and sea worthy, all the crew have lifejackets and you have the means of communication and navigation, other than a mobile phone."
