Firefighters were called to rubbish that was giving off black smoke.
It happened last night at about 6pm when crews from Workington and Maryport tackled the blaze.
The refuse fire was close to Siddick Road and the crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.
A spokesman from Workington Station said: "We were called to a rubbish fire at 6.15pm on Siddick Road.
"The fire was giving off a large amount of black smoke which was a result of burning tyres.
"Crews from Workington and Maryport were at the fire for about an hour."
