READERS have reacted with anger after three of the county’s MPs came out in support of Dominic Cummings.
Mr Cummings, Boris Johnson’s chief advisor, is accused of flouting Covid-19 regulations by driving 260 miles from London to Durham on two occasions, claiming it was because of childcare issues and his wife developing Covid-19 symptoms
On Tuesday Mark Jenkinson, Workington’s MP Trudy Harrison, MP for Copeland, and Dr Neil Hudson, who represents Penrith and the Border, all voiced support for Mr Cummings after he explained his actions in a press conference.
Carlisle’s MP, John Stevenson however said Mr Cummings should stand down.
One reader said: “Failing to listen to your constituents again? Big mistake.”
Another reader said: “Arrogant and offensive, just about covers it.” A third said simply: “There’s so much going on here that’s wrong.”
Dr Hudson reacted to the criticism of his decision, telling The Cumberland News: “I completely understand people’s feelings over this situation.
“I have not called for Mr Cummings’ resignation; that is a decision for the Prime Minister.
“Some of Mr Cummings’ actions were not defendable and human beings make mistakes, but I believe he was acting as parent and husband trying to look after his family whilst trying to keep people safe.
“As I said before, I wish an apology had been forthcoming, but now the police have made their conclusions, I think we need to draw a line and focus on our national and local efforts to combat the coronavirus crisis.”
