Each week, the Whitehaven News will be inviting you to nominate a person who you feel is doing a fabulous job of keeping people’s spirits high during this uncertain and challenging time.

Whether it’s a helpful neighbour, a caring councillor or a shopkeeper who made you smile, we want to hear all about who you think deserves a bunch of flowers and endless recognition.

For our first Person of the Week, it's a two-in-one nomination for power couple, Louise and Carl Walmsley.

The Whitehaven Town Councillors represent Mirehouse ward, and have dedicated their lives to ensure their community is heard and supported.

Using their #MirehouseMatters Facebook page, the duo communicates with over 2,500 residents, updating the page multiple times a day to keep the group up to date on the latest Covid-19 news

Letting people know where they can get any help they need is also a key part of Louise and Carl's work, using the page to identify the elderly and vulnerable in their ward and making sure they get what they need.

And part of making this work means that Louise has been delivering prescriptions on-foot for Mirehouse Pharmacy, as well as collecting donations of essentials and handing them out to those most in need.

If that wasn't enough, the dedicated pair have overseen donations of potatoes from Fraser's of Whitehaven, toilet roll from Christine Wharrior and even euros being converted back into sterling to help those struggling with money during the pandemic.

Commenting on their work, Carl said: "We have a genuine love for the estate and its people.

"We've been overwhelmed by the support and the community spirit. The full estate out clapping the NHS staff last Thursday was mind blowing – you could hear them from Hensingham and Woodhouse."

He continued: "It's always a nice feeling to be nominated for something like this, you do feel appreciated as at times it feels like you've done community work for so long, people just start to expect your help.

"But neither of us do it for the praise or recognition. It is a genuine lovely feeling and it actually brings us closer together as a couple."

Remaining humble as ever, Louise added she was thrilled to be nominated for Person of the Week, and shared the praise with all volunteers and unsung heroes.

Carl added: "I'd like to personally thank all our volunteers – genuine heroes of the community, going above and beyond.

"The majority of the residents have been fantastic in following guidelines, and I'd like to thank them all for keeping our estate as safe as possible.

"I'd also like to thank our shops and pharmacy who have been professional throughout this providing delivery services to the old and vulnerable and those self isolating. Honestly so proud of everybody on the estate #MirehouseMatters."
