With death numbers rising people are being reminded of how important it is to stay at home.

After images appeared of people travelling to tourist hotspots when they had been advised to stay at home, a lockdown was imposed.

Police now have the ability to impose fines for people who are going against government guidelines and have a presence on the streets across the county.

In a number of location the police have set up checkpoints to asses if journeys people are making are needed and in some cases have been advised to go back home.

Social distancing is extremely important in stopping the spread of coronavirus.

Ahead of the weekend, Cumbria Tourism is reinforcing the importance of staying at home.

The managing director of Cumbria Tourism, which is the largest membership organisation in Cumbria with 2,500 members, Gill Haigh, said: “With the weekend coming up and this gorgeous weather we’re having, it’s even more important that we all follow government advice and stay at home.

“We know it could be very tempting to head to the fells, lakes and other outdoor spaces across Cumbria and the Lake District, but please don’t.

“We ask you to think about the community, your own health and that of household members, be responsible, stay at home and together we can stop the spread of this disease and help save lives.’

Cumbria Tourism is the county’s official destination management organisation and is at the heart of the Cumbria visitor economy. The team are urging people to think twice and not risk heading out unless it is essential.
