A COMMUNITY campaigner has launched a helpline for everyone affected by the Coronavirus crisis.

Richard Francis, 33, from Carlisle, has started the Leave a Light On 24 hour telephone helpline, email and Facebook page - to help those that find themselves stuck in Penrith and Carlisle.

In 2016 he received a Community Hero Award for his work with victims of Carlisle's floods, he's also been involved in a number of other community campaigns.

Now he's set his mind to putting together a team of experts to help people, round the clock, with problems during the pandemic.

These include experts in teaching, finance, counselling, recruitment, for those that need, for example, temporary jobs during or after the crisis

The trainee paramedic, who's a dad-of-one, said: "I used the name because although it is a very dark time, I wanted the people of Cumbria to know there is light not only at the end.

"We've already had a few calls, one was from an elderly lady who was wondering if she could get help for her neighbours - she was feeling isolated and did not know what to do.

"It could even be NHS staff who just want to sound off after their shift.

"So, by offering a 24 hour helpline we are able to be on the phone for just a simple chat if that’s all that is needed or if not, but we can also signpost them to someone trained in their specific need.

"I have set up this group in the hope of minimising misconstrued information and limit the number of volunteers that are leaving their home to help, which don’t get me wrong it’s amazing the efforts people are going to we just need to ensure there is as little people on the streets as possible and keep the rest virtual until this crisis is over."

At the moment he hopes the experts will work in six hours shifts around throughout the day and night.

When it's safe to do so Richard is also looking to hold an event for people where people can meet the experts in person in order to help people get back on their feet after the crisis.

Richard added: "It's very important to also recovery afterwards, to get these specialists together in like a recruitment day."

The helpline number is 07586 456495 or email: Lalorecovery2020@gmail.com.

Richard is still looking for people who think their expertise may be helpful.
