STRIKING university staff remained defiant in their stance on the first official day of picketing, despite terrible weather conditions.

University and College Union (UCU) members at The University of Bradford were on the frontline today, at the Great Horton Road entrance to the uni.

The picket ran for roughly two hours from 8.30am in the morning.

Many of the signs had some form of waterproof protection surrounding them to ensure their messages were heard loud and clear.

UCU members right across the country were striking on account of changes to a pension scheme and failures to make improvements on pay, equality, casualisation and workloads.

Many staff members from the 74 universities involved will take part in the full 14 days of strikes, across the next four weeks.

Another round of picketing takes place tomorrow, but the next day of action for University of Bradford UCU staff will be Wednesday, February 26, according to member Steve Jenkins.

The strikes will run into March and they come after UCU also picketed for eight days in November and December last year.
