On February 8 my family and I descended on Henry's in Workington on the spur of the moment.

We had not booked, and it was pleasant to be able to arrive spontaneously, order and sit down for lunch.

We were warmly welcomed and a staff member took the time to talk me through all the possible vegetarian menu variations, despite also running the bar and serving the food.

It was a surprise to find that all main meals are £5, which proved to be incredible value for money.

Set lunch included choices from scampi with salad, peas and chips; gammon with egg or pineapple, salad and chips, battered chicken strips with chips and peas and a dip of your choice; Cumberland sausage with egg, onion rings, peas and chips; chicken tikka masala with rice or chips or both; homemade steak and ale pie, with chips and peas; to a choice of burgers, including Henry’s burger with goats cheese and caramalised onion, New Yorker, with chicken breast topped with bacon, cheese and barbeque sauce, baconaise burger and cajun chicken burger.

Or we could choose from the snack menu, which had jacket potatoes, wraps, paninis and sandwiches with a choice of different fillings.

They also offer a children’s menu of sausage, pizza or chicken nuggets served with chips, peas or beans.

Alternatively, the specials board for the day had deep fried brie with sweet chilli sauce, garlic mushrooms with garlic bread, Hawaiian gammon, and Henry’s pizza wrap all served with salad and chips, hunters chicken with chips and peas, chicken and pasta in a creamy garlic sauce with garlic bread, or an all day breakfast.

In spite of the many choices, three of us fancied something very similar from the snack menu, and my dad went for the homemade steak and ale pie.

Two of us opted for a wrap, with roasted vegetables of mushrooms, onions, peppers and halloumi strips, salad, coleslaw and chips. I had the Henry’s pizza wrap, which was very similar but had cheese on top.

All three of us thought that the wraps were flavourful, enhanced by the roasted vegetables, which worked really well with the halloumi strips. The salad and coleslaw sides were delicious too.

My dad’s homemade steak and ale pie was tasty, substantial and tender.

We were offered the sweet menu, all priced reasonably at £2.95, and chose sticky toffee pudding and hot chocolate fudge cake, which were both served with optional ice cream and cream and chocolate brownie sundaes.

All the sweets were the perfect size - not a sliver or single spoonful in sight.

I was fortunate enough to have had the sundae and manage a taste of the sticky toffee pudding.

Henry’s is open for lunch from Tuesday to Saturday from 12pm to 2pm. For meat lovers Henry’s do a carvery on Sunday from 12pm to 2.30pm for £7.95, or if you want your Sunday lunch delivered they offer this in the Workington postcode area for £8.95. Call Henry’s from 11.30am on 01900 601445.

For just over £30, four of us ate two delicious courses. We were impressed by the quality, value for money and friendliness of service and Henry’s is now on my families list of places to visit. We will definitely be returning. I would give Henry’s five stars.
