A troop of scouts were bowled over with excitement after they received a letter from the Queen.

The children from 12th Carlisle Scouts have spent some time writing letters to the monarch to find out more about her time as a girl guide and when she was in the armed forces.

Thrilled with a response, the letter written by her Lady in Waiting, detailed her time and Princess Margaret time spent as part of the groups.

The letter detailed how Princess Elizabeth was the first female member of the Royal family to serve in the army full time.

The Princess at the time was appointed as an honorary second subaltern in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She trained as a driver and mechanic and was given the rank of honorary junior commander, the female equivalent of captain at the time, five months later.

The Scouting Association has an important like to the royal family as the highest roles in the association are the honorary positions of Patron and President.

These roles are held by the Head of State and a member of the Royal Family respectively, currently Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Kent.

After months of waiting for a reply, the understanding group received a detailed letter containing all the different aspects of her military career and her time as a girl guide.

Thrilled with the details shared Paddy Mallaburn said: “I would like you all to know the existing news all sections got, in November the scouts wrote some letters addressed to the Queen, asking about her time as a girl guide and how it was in the army.

“We got a reply from the Queens Lady in Waiting telling us a lot of information.

He added: “Every member tonight commented on the quality of the paper with one saying ‘It’s fancy paper isn’t it.’

Behind the letter-writing was Chloe McHattie who got the reply from Richenda Elton, who has been a Lady in Waiting for the Queen since 1987, who sent her Majesty’s good wishes to all of those in the group.

Explaining why the Queen herself was unable to write back as she receives hundreds of letters a day, but is pleased they’re enjoying the scouts.
