The first place in Cumbria to be hit by Storm Ciara was Shap when rising flood water on the A6 cut the village off.

Emergency services worked with residents to help save many homes.

As the water continued to rise, 999 crews and villagers were kept fuelled by Shap Chippy in response to their efforts.

The shop posted on its social media: ”The village is returning to normality now.

“The fire service have done a fantastic job in keeping as many homes and businesses from flooding.

“Special shout out to those who were out in the streets helping others and getting their homes pumped out.

“We made sure the firemen were fuelled up with free coffee and sausage and chips as a thank you for their efforts.”

The surrounding area suffered with cars being left abandoned as roads filled with water.

Villages such as Bolton and Cliburn were surrounded by water with vehicles stranded after the drivers had bailed to safety.

Morland witnessed huge breaches and villager Sarah Alderton said: “It’s a very scary situation knowing you might get flooded. I’m sure there are people in a worse situation than us, but it’s not looking good.”
