A former soldier who organised a successful poppy appeal in just weeks has had his efforts recognised.

Jamie Richardson, 30, of Workington, stepped up to take over Workington British Legion’s poppy appeal in September – and they managed to raise nearly £40,000.

Mr Richardson, who spent 10 years in the army with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, was given an award for outstanding contribution to the Poppy Appeal by county chairman Ian Fisher.

His proud mum Lesley Jackson said: “He got this award for spurring on volunteers and achieving a total that topped the previous year. Also for successfully running a campaign at such short notice.

“He officially took over in September so he didn’t have a lot of planning time but he new that people wanted to collect.

“He put messages out on Facebook and contacted some of his friends and lots of people came forward to help.

“It is a family thing to be involved. Obviously he is ex-army and myself and Pat Lavin organise the Armed Forces Day and we have dragged him into helping various things like that.

“And coming out of the army he has got some more free time so he has got involved in committees in the Workington Legion and the poppy appeal.”

When he was given the award, Mr Richardson thanked everyone who had contributed and helped out.

He added: “Without the generosity from the people of Workington this amount could not be raised, we thank everyone.”

And Bill Pearson, 93, a World War Two veteran, who regularly attends the legion added his thanks.

he said: “I’m proud of all efforts and achievements Workington Royal British Legion are making.”

The club is now turning its attention towards VE Day and celebrations on May 8.
