Celebrations will be taking place around the country to mark VE Day.

May 8 has been declared a public holiday to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

It will be a time to remember, reflect and pay tribute to the millions at home and abroad who played such a vital part in achieving peace.

And we want to hear how you plan to celebrate this momentous day.

We would also like to hear from any readers who remember where they were on VE Day and how it was marked.

Perhaps people can remember parents or grandparents sharing stories about the special day.

Ian Fisher, vice chair of Cumberland and Westmorland Royal British Legion and chairman of Bransty British Legion, is in no doubt about the importance of marking VE Day.

“As war veterans pass on they take their stories and tales to the grave,” he said. “It’s so important that we all remember these people and what happened.

“I always say to families that, if they can, they should write a history of their dad or grandad. It’s not about glorifying them but simply remembering what they did and all those people who suffered and died.”

Mr Fisher is hoping towns and councils will mark the day with special events.

“Things tend to be centralised in London, it’s important that there are events throughout the country,” he said.

“I think it’s important that the younger generation are involved because they are the ones going to be leading the councils and country in the future.”

Anyone wanting to organise a street party which would involve a road closure should contact Copeland Council.

“They may also need a Temporary Event Notice if they plan licensed activities on unlicensed premises,” said a spokesman. “Our licensing team will happily advise people on what they might need.”
