Following the news that ASDA will be closing its in-store meat and fish counters, readers have given their reaction:

Sheila Drewery said: “That is good news for local butchers and fishmongers.”

Christopher Wilde said: “Always buy local when you can, supermarkets got permission to build because they would create jobs while killing the high street and family businesses. Plus if you do use the supermarkets, don’t use self check outs, someone probably lost their jobs when they got installed.”

Helen Cummings said: “I shop where I want to. Local butchers are very good but not everyone can afford to shop there.”

Michelle Farish Huntington said: “Well that’s another supermarket I wont be shopping at.”

Colin Garnett said: “This might tempt more people to visit their local butcher in Barrow town centre. There are several quality butchers on the high street or in the indoor market selling everything from bacon and sausages to specialist meats.”

Alan Hagan said: “Supermarkets don’t create jobs they create a system where a lot of people get 16 hours of work a week.”

David Johnstone said: “Best place to buy meat is Lado in the indoor market lovely joints of beef.”

Steph Hadwin said: “There are butchers in Barrow Market and dalton road. Also butchers in Dalton and butcher and fishmonger in Ulverston. Whilst there may not be many, those left are good!”

Stuart Metcalfe said: “Local butchers is the best the chicken and bacon, in supermarkets it's cheap and watery, you pay more at the butchers because it is quality stuff.”
