A PLEA for information has been issued following a week of vandalism targeting a new bus shelter.
The Thornton Road bus shelter, in Whitehaven, was installed on September 5 of this year by Whitehaven Town Council, and was damaged by “vandals” and “hooligans” just three months later.
The first incident is believed to have taken place on the night of December 4, with a second incident occurring over the weekend, and a “brick-sized rock” is thought to have been used to smash the glass panes both times.
Mayor of Whitehaven, councillor Brian O’Kane, has been left speechless by the destruction.
“Words fail me,” he said. “How someone could pick up a rock and damage community property, it’s something I’ll never understand.”
He added: “It makes you think we should just get rid of the bus shelters so they can’t be damaged, but why should one group of hooligans ruin it for everyone else?
“Someone out there knows who did it, so we just want people to come forward and tell us.”
The destruction has been reported to Cumbria Police, and they are urging anyone with information to contact them one 101, quoting crime reference numbers CRI00044304 and CRI00043979.
