A 13-metre scallop boat is grounded between Maryport and Silloth.
Lifeboat crews were callout at around 4.30am to reports of the boat stuck in the Mawbray area.
Workington RNLI's Dorothy May White boat along with Silloth RNLI attended the incident and attempted to free the grounded vessel at high tide – but this was unsuccessful.
A spokesman for Workington RNLI said a second attempt will be made at high tide later today.
The spokesman added that the single crewman on the scallop boat remained onboard and did not have any injuries.
The Dorothy May White boat has been slightly damaged during the attempted rescue, and the crew were heading back to Workington at around 7.30am.
The spokesman said they will return to the grounded boat around 3pm.
