Cleator Moor Brass Band and Whitehaven Brass Band joined forces recently to organise and perform at a fundraising Movie Night concert.

Well-known TV and cinema music was performed to raise funds for both bands, who were delighted and grateful to have two singers, Alana Altham and Aniya Ashforth, joining them in the concert.

A cake sale, a raffle and a popcorn machine operated by owner Kim Gillespie helped to raise more funds which were shared equally between the two bands.

One prize, a homemade fruit cake decorated with musical symbols and made by one of the band’s players Linda Asforth, was won by Josie Godwin, who donated it to the residents of the new Care Home, The Gables, at Hensingham.

The Cleator Moor players duly attended the care home and were warmly welcomed by both staff and residents and played for an hour before the cake was presented. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the concert and joined in, singing and clapping to some of the numbers.

The band thanked Helen Green, manager of The Gables, for allowing the concert to take place and to the staff on duty for making band members feel welcome.

Cleator Moor Brass Band was formed in April 2007 as a community group whose aims were to encourage people of all ages to become interested in brass banding and, as an ensemble, attend various events throughout the year, including charity events.

The band is completely self-funding and depends entirely on donations and monies earned from concerts and other paid public appearances. It also takes part in charity events at no charge.

Pictured with the cake are several residents together with members of staff and several band members including The Band’s Musical Director David Murdoch, junior cornet player Ellie Godwin (who donated the cake on behalf of her Grandmother Josie Godwin), the cake maker Linda Ashforth and Care Home Supervisors Helen King and Dawn Davidson.
