SEVEN life-saving devices are being placed around Whitehaven, thanks to the generosity of the town council.

The defibrillators, which are used to give an electric shock to people in cardiac arrest, have been purchased by Whitehaven Town Council.

Whitehaven Rugby Union FC has already received one of the defibrillators and now another has been donated to the Royal British Legion Ivy Club at Bransty, which was fitted by builders S W Chambers.

Ian Fisher, chairman of Bransty British Legion, said: “We are really pleased to receive the defibrillator. I have seen them around the town in different locations. I thought it was a good idea that we got one up here.

“We hope that it’s never needed but if it is, it’s there for that purpose. We are thankful to Whitehaven Town Council for allowing us to put it on the premises and it will hopefully save someone’s life on the estate.”

The town council is now looking for qualified electricians to fit the remaining cabinets.

These will be located at: the Pelican Garage, New Road; Premier Stores and The Lion Pub, Woodhouse; Peking House, Hensingham; and Johnston House, Hillcrest Avenue.

“I hope some local firms will see the benefit it will give to the community,” Mr Fisher added.
