Pupils have been treated to a new breakfast club, providing them with a tummy-filling and brain-boosting start to the day.

Thornhill Primary School have been providing healthy breakfasts for their youngsters from 7.30am each school day since the start of the autumn term, and Monday saw the club's official opening.

As well as being given tasty croissants and fresh fruit salads, pupils were delighted to meet Hope, the Greggs Foundation mascot, at the opening, with West Lakes Multi-Academy Trust CEO Jonathan Johnson also making an appearance.

Executive headteacher Mrs Figes was delighted with the opening, and said: "This has been a real success for our school community, and I'm so proud of our staff and all the hard work they have put into the project – it has made such a difference to the children and our families."

The wrap-around care service was supported by the Greggs Foundation, and Thornhill school staff are thrilled to offer the club.

They have noticed an increase in the children's attention as well as attendance, and can clearly see how much their pupils value time together in the morning.

Wrap-around care leader Donna Hawley said: "Greggs has been a marvellous sponsor for this project, which helps all children in school to get the right start to the school day.

"Children from two-11 years old benefit from a healthy meal and good company."

She added: "The staff love running the breakfast club, and it's going from strength to strength. This is a good compliment to our 30-hour Nursery offer, which supports working families with term-time childcare."

Parents are also impressed with the breakfast club, and mum Sandra Gallacher said: "It offers a calm, inclusive start to the school morning.

"The children like coming to school so much, so they love coming for extra hours’

And Year 6 pupil Layla May Finlay particularly enjoys having her breakfast with classmates: "I like coming to breakfast club because it’s not a rush to eat your breakfast, and I like to see my friends."

Thornhill Primary School also offer after-school provision until 5.30pm.
