Copeland MP Trudy Harrison is continuing to make the case for A595 improvements and the Whitehaven Relief Road.

Mrs Harrison met with Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps recently and said she was reassured by the minister's encouragement.

She also invited him to Copeland to see the issues along the route.

Highways England is set to meet with local leaders soon to update them on plans.

Mrs Harrison said: “It is vital that the A595 is upgraded. It plays a huge role in our economy, not only for Sellafield but all businesses, residents and visitors to our area.”

A public consultation into the relief road was held at the end of last year.

Mr Shapps said: “It was good to meet with Trudy, who has been pushing hard for these road improvements in her constituency. We are committed to improving infrastructure in Whitehaven, Copeland, Workington and across Cumbria.”

Mrs Harrison has consistently made the case to Highways England and Department of Transport about upgrading the road and also brought former Transport Minister Chris Grayling to Copeland to discuss the plans.
